The Objective of Active Myofascial Therapy – The Diamond Method

The objective is three-fold:

The first is to "re-educate" your neuromuscular system.  To function correctly muscles need to be able to contract completely but more importantly to relax completely. Through proper breathing, relaxation techniques, and movement patterns your nervous system is "reminded" if you will, of how to function efficiently. You will also enhance your proprioceptive and kinesthetic awareness of your joint and limb positions.

The second objective is to develop balanced functional strength and joint flexibility through corrective exercises which are called 'Actions'.

The third objective of AMT is to improve physiologically efficient posture and movement -- it's important to learn how and where your head, limbs, and trunk should be held while standing, sitting, lying, and moving.  This means being aware of how you are 'holding' and using your body. (You could be tensing your shoulder muscles all day while at work with out even knowing it!)

Since everything that affects your body is inter-connected, there will also be an assessment of other factors that may contribute to your pain, such as your work/desk set-up, sleep positions, etc.  By addressing all of these aspects we will help you increase your mobility, improve your posture, expand your breathing, aid your digestion and reduce or eliminate your pain.  For AMT to have the greatest results, we focus on 3 components: 50% Awareness (of body and breath),  25% soft-tissue mobilization (like massage), and the last 25% is Actions (stretching and strengthening).

Note that AMT is not something done 'to' you. During your session you are not passive (like massage), but are active. You move in prescribed ways, press muscles up into the therapists applied pressure, and do the gentle Actions.

Your therapy plan is determined based on your initial evaluation. This comprehensive approach provides long term results. It is not, however, realistic to expect a few one-hour sessions to undo all your bad habits that you may have been doing all these years or a lifetime of incorrect body mechanics! So to enhance your therapy results, an individualized program of Actions are designed for you to do at home or throughout the day and some life-style changes may also be beneficial to incorporate daily.

To facilitate your healing, please note that after an Active Myofascial Therapy – The Diamond Method™ session it is highly recommended you allow a minimum of five minutes to walk before sitting down. If this additional time is not available, please notify your therapist to finish your session a little early.

To assure the best possible results, your therapist will be happy to discuss your treatment plan with your other health care providers.  It may be necessary to have your doctor write a prescription to help you receive reimbursement from your insurance company.  Most workers' compensation, automobile accident and personal injury cases will cover AMT under neuromuscular reeducation, myofascial release, and therapeutic exercise.
